Glynn Brasington

Councillor

After 30 years as expats, working in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, USA and New Zealand, my wife and I purchased a bungalow in Bembridge in 2014. Working with local builders we knocked down the old building and the new self build is where I live now.

Brought up with an Akala (Cub Leader) mother and father who ran a swimming club, community involvement seems to be in the blood.

Before expat life, I was a scout leader and group scout leader in North Essex. More recently during our time in Japan I was an active member of the American Chamber of Commerce and took the lead in organising groups to go to help clear houses following the 2011 massive earthquake and tsunami.

On returning to the UK I was part of a small group of residents in a new development in Cambridge who established a community centre under an S106 order. As a trustee, I prepared the business plan and managed staff for the first year.

In 2018 my wife passed away and I decided to again become involved with the local community here. After a short spell of voluntary work with HMP isle of Wight I became aware of the Parish Council committees in Bembridge and joined the Sustainability working group, drafting the Climate Emergency Plan for the council in 2022. Since then I have been part of the Resilience team and most recently have been working to establish a Tree Warden network for the Isle of Wight.

I was co-opted onto the council in 2025 and I am a member of the Environment and Neighbourhood Committee and Finance and Governance Committee.
